how to remove blood from mattress

It's frustrating enough to get your sheets stained with period blood, but it's even more upsetting if those get through onto your beloved mattress.

Nobody likes to wake up in the morning and discover that you've bled through all the layers underneath you.

With a little bit of effort and some help from readily available homemade materials, you can get rid of the stain completely.

Treat the stain ASAP

Treat the blood stain as soon as you notice it to have a better chances of getting rid of it completely. Blood stains are not only unsightly and embarrassing. They can cause the spread of harmful bacteria and, like other stains and spills, can significantly reduce the lifespan and quality of your mattress.

Good news is that the Koala Mattress actually has an easy to remove, machine wash safe, removable mattress cover.

To remove blood stains from a mattress you can use many of the same methods as for the sheets with a difference that you don't use as much water. Use dampened clothes and be careful not to soak the mattress as it will take it forever to dry. Too much water can also damage the mattress and contribute to the spread of mildew and bacteria.

With a little help from your pantry

Soak a cloth in cold water and dab at the stain. Remember to use cold water as it dissolves the blood, while hot water would cook the blood, locking it in the fabric.

Get some help from some readily available items in your pantry:

  1. Meat tenderizer is a great helper not only when it comes to your steaks but also for getting rid of blood stains. Mix some meat tenderizer and water to make a paste and rub it into your mattress. Let it sit for an hour then remove with a cloth soaked in cold water.
  2. Apply some hydrogen peroxide onto the stain, and let it "bubble". Then dab at it with a dampened cloth. Repeat several times if necessary.
  3. Mix baking soda and some cold water to make a paste, apply to the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes. Remove with a damp cloth.
  4. Mix some baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and apply the mixture onto the stain. Let it sit, then clean it off with a damp cloth.

Always let the mattress air dry completely after you treat the stain. Use a fan if necessary to help it dry more quickly, or if it's cold inside.

Now that the stain is out, you can relax!
